The Koala Tavern in Capalaba is a massive pub and restaurant complex with a playground, located just off the main road through Capalaba. You can’t miss the huge koala signage as you drive past.
The Koala Tavern is firmly aimed at families with younger kids, with regular events such as family fun days and kids clubs as well as the outdoor playground.

The Venue
The Koala Tavern is huge, with lots of space for everyone. Inside there’s sports bars, pool tables, a gaming room, massive bar and plenty of tables in the restaurant.
Outside is a spacious beer garden with lots more tables and the playground. The shade is hit and miss on these tables, so keep that in mind if you’re going on a hot sunny day.
There’s live music in the beer garden at the weekends.
The Food
The food at the Koala Tavern is your standard average pub food. There were a few imaginative dishes on the menu such as pumpkin soup in a bread bowl which was tasty and welcome on a cold day, but otherwise it’ll be the usual fare such as steaks, burgers and parmis. From my experience the Brisbane pubs with playgrounds are great spots for parents to relax while the kids play, but don’t be expecting the highest quality food.
The focus on younger kids continues through to the kids menu, with dinosaur nuggets a very popular choice for the little ones.
As well as catering for their youngest visitors, the Koala Tavern have also thought about their older clientele, with a senior’s menu on offer.
The Playground
The Koala Tavern playground is outside in the beer garden. It’s multi-levelled and koala themed, with plastic slides, small climbing equipment and bubble lookout points for the kids.
The great news is that the playground is well shaded and fully enclosed with a gate, giving parents excellent peace of mind. The tables are right next to the playground, so you’ll be able to watch your kids from your table.
The playground is small and designed for the younger kids – your preschoolers will be in their element, but older kids will likely get bored fairly quickly.
Koala Tavern, Capalaba – Final Thoughts
The Koala Tavern is a good choice if you’re local to Capalaba and have toddlers or preschoolers. With the outdoor seating right next to the playground your kids can play while you relax. The food isn’t the best, but you’ll come for the few hours of peace and a cold beer while your kids are entertained in the playground.
