Tamborine Mountain Distillery is a family-run distillery located at the end of the famous Gallery Walk.

Known for its handcrafted liqueurs and spirits, this award-winning distillery is the perfect place to unwind with a drink in a beautiful setting.

It’s child-friendly, dog-friendly and wheelchair accessible – everyone is welcome here.

The Setting

Just beyond the bustle of Gallery Walk, Tamborine Mountain Distillery feels like a peaceful oasis amid the action.

The distillery is housed in a Tudor-style building set back from the road and surrounded by lovely gardens. Outside there’s a small playground with a cubby house, swing and slide – perfect for keeping the kids entertained while you enjoy a tasting.

There’s plenty of shaded seating right by the playground too, and around the back is the working distillery itself.

Inside, it’s all warm timber, barrels and glowing displays of colourful bottles. Behind the bar is a huge wall of liqueurs that catches your eye straight away, but look around and there’s so much more to see. Bottles of every shape and size line the room, each filled with vibrant concoctions.

There are blackboards on the wall explaining the distilling process, and tables lined with jars of ingredients and infusions.

It reminded me of an old-style apothecary, with a European feel. I loved it!

The Drinks

There’s a huge selection of liqueurs and spirits on offer here – from fruit, herbal and dessert liqueurs to spirits like gin, whisky, rum, vodka and even absinthe. Everything is made onsite in the distillery.

If the choice feels overwhelming, the friendly staff are incredibly knowledgeable and happy to guide you.

You can purchase a bottle (or two!) to take home. There are lots of options to suit every budget, from full-sized bottles to test-tube samples of the same liqueurs.

The bottles are so beautifully presented – they would make really lovely gifts.

Tasting

For $10 per person, you can choose a tasting paddle of four drinks. You’ll be given an extensive menu with the bestsellers highlighted, so take your time choosing your four.

On our tasting paddles we tried:

  • Banana Liqueur – our favourite
  • Wild Forest Plum Liqueur – strong and punchy
  • Single Malt Whisky – nice and warming, would be great served over ice
  • Turkish Delight Liqueur – so flavourful and delicious
  • Lilly Pilly Gin – fantastic neat
  • Limoncello – another favourite
  • Lychee and Elderflower Liqueur – really light and slightly herbal
  • Butter Caramel Liqueur – would be great for a dessert drink

We both loved the Banana Liqueur and the Limoncello best – so tasty! The Turkish Delight Liqueur and Lilly Pilly Gin came a close second.

Each drink we tried had a well-balanced flavour – subtle, distinct, and never overpowering.

Good to know: if you’re driving – a tasting paddle of four drinks equals one standard serve of alcohol.

The Distillery

Part of the charm of the Tamborine Mountain Distillery is how passionate they are about the scientific process behind distilling – and how keen they are to share it with you. From the information boards to the jars of ingredients and the behind-the-scenes tours – you’re invited to explore it with them.

As well as the tasting, you can take a tour of the distillery, learn about the equipment and processes, or book an immersive class to blend your own liqueur, spirit or cocktail. I had a sneak peek of both, and the gin-making looked like a lot of fun!
