Let me tell you about a Brisbane pub with a playground you might not have heard of. Centenary Taven is tucked away in Sumner, in the western suburbs of Brisbane.

Here’s my full review of Centenary Tavern.

The Venue

Centenary Tavern is hidden away behind a Dan Murphy’s bottle shop – you can’t see it from the road and could easily miss it.

The pub includes a large indoor area, conference facilities, sports screens, pokies, a huge undercover patio area (also where the kitchen is, surprisingly), and a kids’ playground. There’s a mix of high and low tables throughout.

The inside of Centenary Tavern has been recently refurbished and looks great – fresh and modern, with a beautiful bar. The outdoor areas are looking a little more tired and could do with a refresh too.

It’s a huge venue with plenty of seating, so a good option if you’re turning up without a booking. We went on a Saturday afternoon – normally a busy time for family-friendly pubs, and there were plenty of tables still available. In fact no one was sitting outside at all – I think this is a venue not many people know about.

The Food

The food is your standard pub grub. We ordered baked camembert and a steak, and the kids had dino nuggets and a cheeseburger. The cheeseburger was great, the baked camembert really delicious, and the gravy perfect for dunking your chips in. But the steak and dino nuggets were overcooked.

The meals also came out at different times, and we had quite a wait on the steak.

Of all the Brisbane pubs with playgrounds we’ve tried so far – we’re still looking for one that serves really good food. If you know of a pub with a playground and great food – we’ll be heading there next!

Centenary Tavern – Playground

The outside playground is really large – more like something you’d find in a park than a pub. It has climbing equipment for older kids, a separate toddler area, and a seesaw (very popular with all the kids). Again, it’s looking a little worn and could use a refresh. Technically the playground is gated, although the gate has seen better days and doesn’t fully enclose the space.

The standout feature is that there are a few tables inside the playground where you can order food directly to your table. As a parent, this is a huge win. Being able to watch your kids closely and have food and drinks brought to you is a real bonus.

Well done Centenary Tavern – extra points for this!

Note: unless you’re sitting on the tables inside the playground, it’s not visible from any other part of the venue. It’s tucked around a corner and completely out of sight – not an ideal setup for parents.

There’s also a small indoor games room with a few arcade machines, but you do have to pay for these.

Centenary Tavern – Final Thoughts

If you’re in this part of Brisbane and looking for a casual spot where the kids can play while you have a drink or a quick bite – Centenary Tavern does the job.

What Else to do in the Area

You’re halfway to Ipswich and the Queensland Rail Museum.

Centenary Tavern would also make a great stop on the way back from Summer Land Camels – a fun and unique farm experience the whole family will love. Read my full review of Summer Land Camels here.
